YES AND... but also NOT!

No isn’t always a block – Sometimes the best yes is a no

Learning to accept each other’s offers is vital in improvisation. However, many improvisers end up being trained in a ‘Pavlovian’ response to create improvisation through saying yes! to everything without understanding the offer or the story. This workshop will show you that sometimes the best Yes is a NO!

Breaking the mold to find new improvisation - Gender / Genre

Many of the genres we play have characters created to reflect the society of the time. Even though the author set the story in a different period, the actions or behaviors of the characters represented the reader's social sensibilities. These acceptable social rules were heavily categorized into male and female behaviors. Today's world is different. Our social dynamics and "rules" of engagement encompass more freedom than the rules of the past, but our narrative is still chained to historical roles. For example, if we continue to classify behavior by gender, reflecting today's world, aren't we perpetuating a form of sexism? Do actions need to be gendered in order for the story to be told? Do the stories remain "true" with respect to the genre regardless of the casting of the "genre"? By questioning, challenging, and exploring the character's purpose in the story, and removing gendered assumptions, we open up new levels of play and unpredictable possibilities. The effects on the audience are really very interesting.
